GameGust asked AI: Top 10 Game Songs of All Time?

GameGust asked AI (both ChatGPT and Bard) to research to see what the best 10 songs of all time in gaming soundtracks were. See what these large language models chose for the top 10 best game songs below.

ChatGPT said it cant use the internet to research but it gave me a list valid until 2022, so that leaves out any potential newer games like Tears of the Kingdom.

Bard was able to use the internet to research a more up to date top 10 list.
Lets see if they have similar taste and pick any of our favorites?

In the first section i have provided links (neither AI bots provided links to their choices) to their selections as well as the comments that Bard made about each song it selected (ChatGPT didnt comment on its choices).

In the second section you can listen to embedded YT version of the songs without opening up a bunch of tabs.

Click here to scroll to the second section and skip the first part and see what you think of these selected game songs (cos what does AI know about choosing good songs anyhow?)

First Section: Interrogating the AI bots to see if they have any taste in game music.

Please do some research on the internet on gaming websites and find out the top 10 songs used in game soundtracks of all time. this includes game consoles like nintendo 64 and computer games.

ChatGPT replied with this top 10 list:

I’m sorry for any inconvenience, but as of my last update in January 2022, I don’t have the capability to browse the internet or access real-time information, including current lists or rankings. However, I can provide you with a list of some iconic and popular game soundtracks up until that time. Please note that rankings may vary based on personal preferences, and new releases may have emerged since then.

  1. “Tetris Theme” – Various versions
  2. Super Mario Bros. Theme” Koji Kondo (Super Mario series)
  3. “The Legend of Zelda Theme”Koji Kondo (The Legend of Zelda series)
  4. “Halo Theme” – Martin O’Donnell (Halo series)
  5. “Ezio’s Family” – Jesper Kyd (Assassin’s Creed II)

  9. “Megalovania” – Toby Fox (Undertale)

Bard replied with this top 10 list (bard also reviewed each song):

please do some research on the internet on gaming websites and find out the top 10 songs used in game soundtracks of all time. this includes game consoles like sega mega drive and nintendo 64 and computer games.

I believe the song Bard meant here was Jet Set Radio by Hideki Naganuma, as there was no song called “Bauhaus-Bucht”, even when i asked Bard again to provide a link it couldnt find one. So ive linked to Jet Set Radio

I think Bard got this one mixed up too. “Lifelight” is a song from Smash Brothers, i couldn’t find one from Sonic Mania. Did it mean to pick a Sonic Mania theme song here, perhaps Studiopolis? Or Smash Brothers “Lifelight”?

Second Section: Below are the selections interweaved (1,1,2,2,3,3…) from both lists for you to listen to.

  • 1. Tetris Theme
2. "Super Mario Bros. Theme" - Koji Kondo (Super Mario series)
3. "Main Theme Song" - Legend of Zelda

ChatGPT didnt specificy from which Zelda game the theme song was that it liked.
So i just chose the theme song from OOT which is truly fantastic.

4. "Halo Theme" - Halo

  • 5. “Ezio’s Family” by Jesper Kyd – Assassins Creed
5. "Gangplank Galleon" - Banjo Kazooie
  • 6. “Still Alive” – Portal
7. "One Winged Angel" - Final Fantaay VII
8. "Main Theme" (Icarus) by Michael McCann
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
  • 9. “Undertale” – Megalovania
10. "Snake Eater" - Norihiko Hibino & Cynthia Harrell (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater)

I asked ChatGPT what are the Top 20 Australian Made Games?

I asked OpenAI’s GPT3 what are the top 20 Australia games ever made:

What are the top 20 Australian made games of all time on any platform ever made?

* I asked this on the 9th March 2023, it may have different results at a later date.

It replied with its top 20 list, including a comment clarifying its subjective.

These are just a few examples of some of the greatest games of all time, but there are many more that could be added to the list. What makes a game one of the greatest of all time is often subjective, and different players will have their own opinions on the matter.
  1. Hollow Knight (Team Cherry)

Cute bugs rolling dung and fighting with cute swords and shields, looks fun!

2. Hand of Fate (Defiant Development)

Defiant Development had a major indie hit with the original Hand of Fate, which mixed rogue like dungeon crawling with card-based gameplay and action combat, telling its story through well-executed narration. The game became a minor indie hit, selling over half a million copies worldwide, and a sequel followed in 2017.

Unfortunately the studio didn’t survive market conditions and closed in 2019.

In a statement, the studio said “The games market has changed in ways both big and small in the 9 years we’ve been in business. We have not been able to change quickly enough to continue with them”.

3. Crossy Road (Hipster Whale)

Holy mackerole, i just realised this game reminds me of perhaps the first game i ever played. It was called Froggy or Frogger or maybe Froggix (theres been remakes but this was from the 90s). Anyhow Crossy Road looks much better & much blockyness cf Roblox!

4. Armello (League of Geeks)

5. Florence (Mountains)

The game follows the character Florence Yeoh, as she meets and begins a relationship with Krish, a cellist she meets at the park. Players guide Florence through her daily routine and follow her developing relationship with Krish. The story is divided in 20 chapters that are divided into six distinct acts that each represent a period of Florence’s life and growth. Players partake in a series of minigames that replicate Florence’s daily activities, taking control of her thoughts and actions. This is definitely a type of game that is up my ally, i will add it to my list to play.

6. Damsel (Screwtape Studios)
7. Screencheat (Samurai Punk)
8. Dead Static Drive (Team Fanclub)
9. The Gardens Between (The Voxel Agents)
10. Paperbark (Paper House)

Note that this is not an exhaustive list, and there are many other great Australian-made games out there.

Why didnt you include Fruit Ninja by Halfbrick?

I apologize for not including Fruit Ninja in my previous response. Fruit Ninja is indeed a notable and successful Australian-made video game developed by Halfbrick Studios, and it should be mentioned among the top Australian-made video games. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
